Do Your Eyes Decieve You?

Take a brief glance at the drawing above. It is of a French Resistance fighter from WWII. It was copied from a photo of the elder gentleman taken during the war. Nice isn't it?

Now, take a closer look at the man's nose. Did you notice that lines defining the nose are only drawn on the left side of the man's face? Truth be told, I didn't quite notice this until I started the sketch today. Even now, I only take note of the unfinished nose when I am using the artistic part of my brain. At a glance, my mind tells me that man has a complete nose. Just for reference, the original photo is below. Notice in the photo the man's nose just kind of washes away on the right side of his face. In the photo, it is even less noticeable. Neat huh?

Here are two more to gaze upon and consider what really is not included in neither the drawing or the photo. Again, the incomplete nose escapes one's conscious thought. I took a few more liberties in this sketch with the nose, but still it remains incomplete, while to the mind's eye, it is not. Isn't art wonderful?
